ABSTRACT: Three major recovery boiler upgrades have successfully been carried out in Western Canada. These are: Skeena Cellulose Inc. in Prince Rupert, B.C., Western Pulp Ltd. Partnership in Port Alice, B.C., and Fletcher Challenge Canada Ltd. in Mackenzie, B.C. Each of these upgrades has resulted in a significant capacity increase while maintaining or improving on the environmental impact. These results have been achieved mainly by improving the air and liquor systems and without physically increasing the size of the units. This paper discusses the approach, implementation, and results of these cost-effective recovery boiler upgrades.
